Memorial Day 2012

I wanted to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all the people who have served our country in the Armed Forces and to salute those who have fallen while serving.

Below are some older pieces I made.  Also take a moment to read about Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May.  Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars.

Playing Around

If you do not enjoy your time in the shop, you shouldn’t be there.

There are two items I made over the past few days.  The first is the Scrollsaw Man, a pattern from Steve Good.  I did make one addition, I added the Tim’s Woodwork to the front of the table.  To give you an idea of size, it is about a 16 pt. font.

The second is a “Kilroy Was Here”.  I made this from scrap pieces of poplar and plywood.  For those who do not know about Kilroy and the saying Kilroy Was Here, please take a moment and read about it.  I found this wiki site with some information:

I was asked about the size of these projects.  The Kilroy is about 4 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/4 inches wide.  I will be editing this post with the size of the Scrollsaw man soon.

Hope you enjoy these two.

Dad Cave

With all the things I have been making for family and friends I decided that I need something for my shop (other than the vintage Atari banner).  What I made is a variation on the Man Cave.  So I give you the Dad Cave.

It’s Black & White

My brother in-law has someone special in his life who loves penguins so I made the letter opener and stand up penguin.  These were for her birthday on May 18th - Happy Birthday Meg!

My daughter loves zebras.  If you are brave enough to go in her room everything is black and white zebra print.  Ok so may it is black, white and brown.

Happy Mother's Day

Let me start by saying Happy Mother’s day! Ok – I am a couple of days early.

I am very lucky when it comes to Mom’s!

Can’t tell what I am making for my Mom and my wife.  Don’t want to ruin the surprise.

If you are looking for a good Mother’s day pattern you should look at Sue May’s http://www.scrollsawartist.com/ site as well as the Scrollsaw Workshop http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/.

One more thing, seeing as I have not posted any pictures over the past few posts, I give you Nala the Shop Dog.  When I am sitting at the scroll saw often times Nala will come out and watch, even though she can’t see (she is quite short). And if I don't say Hi, she will start licking my leg (when I am wearing shorts).

Nala has also made it to http://dogs.icanhascheezburger.com/.

Pinterest

For those who have not taken a look or heard of Pinterest, it is a social site where you share pictures you see on the internet and like.  About Pinterest is:

“Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.

Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. To get started, request an invite.”

With that being said, if you would like to follow me on Pinterest you can find me at http://pinterest.com/tim_munsey/#, or you could click the "Follow me on Pinterest" button on the left above Links.

It would be great to see more Scroll Saw projects.  Also you can look for Fox Chapel Publishing.  This company has published several scroll saw publications.

Hope to see you there!

Tim's Tips

First Tip:

I have a small tip for those who are working on smaller pieces.  When you are ready to stain the piece or put polyurethane on it.  What I use are the plastic things that go under a flower pot.  They are something you can pick up pretty cheap.  I have seen them called a saucer or a plastic floor guard.  Look in the garden area.

With these it is pretty easy to pour back into the container you keep your stain, oil or polyurethane.

Second Tip:

If you are the type who likes to listen to something in your shop there are two things I would suggest.

The first is Pandora which you can download to your iPod / iPhone.  You will need an internet connection.  With this app you can build a library of music you like.  The more you add the better it gets as Pandora will start adding music of the same type.  This can also run from you PC.  I believe you can also share your playlist.

The second is to check you local library.  Mine has a option to download audio books to run on your iPod. So I download a book, transfer it to my iPod and listen while I work.

Candy Dish

Where I work the receptionist keeps a candy dish on the counter. I thought it looked a bit small. I used a pattern from Steve Good to make something a bit bigger. I get hungry looking at these pictures.

Signed Projects

Here is an idea for those custom made projects. I have recently made a couple of items that were personal gifts. What I did was cut the base of the project and had it sanded and ready for some polyurethane. Prior to doing that I let the person or people who the gift was from, sign the bottom of the base with a Sharpie. Once this has been coated with the polyurethane it is protected and I believe will stay for a long time. One of the projects is a Mother’s day gift for my Mom, so I can not put pictures of that. Don’t want her to see it.

I forgot to add this - Congratulations to Jeff!  He graduated from Fresno Pacific College.  This young man has worked full time and put himself through college.
