Just for Fun

This was a fun small project. It was designed to be cut into a puzzle... I liked it better like this.

UPDATE (10/17/08):
I took my little friend to work and he was helping me guard my desk. Then, as I was talking with a dear friend I found out that her three year old grandson Jacob has cancer. He has been through 4 rounds of chemo and is starting to lose his hair and is sick to his stomach. So I decided my friend would be better off with Jacob to help with his battle! For those who believe and pray – please say a prayer for Jacob and his battle that he his bravely fighting!

For The Kids

I would think most people who get hooked on woodworking (scroll sawing) often look for reasons to make sawdust. With that thought I jumped at this chance!

My sister in-law started a teach position where she is working with special needs children. With the county fair coming up, each of the kids where to make items to enter. So we came up with the idea of making some wood puzzles. As it needed to be related to our state (California) I cut two each of three patterns. We used a silhouette of the state, the brown bear (as seen on our state flag) and a quail (state bird). I cut out the puzzles and sanded the roughest spots and the kids took it from there. They finished sanding and then painted the puzzles. There were a few 1st & 2nd places. Each entry that received a 1st, 2nd or 3rd helped raise money for their school. Congratulations to all of the students for a great job!

Napkin Holder

After refinishing a reclaimed table, we needed a napkin holder to match. Once again, I found a pattern by Steve Good. Once made, I used the same stain as on the table.

Picture Frame

Had to take the challenge of making this! I had not done that much detail work. It was great fun making this. Made from ¼” poplar. This was my first project after carpal tunnel surgery.

Amazing Grace

This was a fun project I made for my wife. Amazing Grace is a song that has alot of meaning to her.

Basket Weave Vase

This pattern called for much thinner wood to make more of a basket. This was my first attempt at the weave type cut. After it was all put together I thought it would make a nice vase.

Letter Opener

Saw this pattern and figured I had to give it a try! I found a beautiful piece of redwood to make this from. Now why I gave this sharp object to my wife....hmmmm.

Humming Bird Ornament

As I mentioned in the Humming Bird Rocker post, my wife loves humming birds. So when I saw this pattern I knew I had to make it.

Magic Apple

I have a good friend in Florida who is a dedicated teacher. I also have a sister in-law who is also a teacher. For both I made a Magic Apple. The one pictured is made of redwood with an arrow made from pine.

What makes it a Magic Apple? Well the apple is one solid piece with a hole drilled through it. The arrow is also a solid piece. However the head and tail of the arrow are bigger than the hole in the apple. The arrow has not been broken and glued back together.

Kittens

Another great pattern by Steve Good! I decided to make this for a neighbor who has been a true blessing to my family! She has helped us out a great deal. Needless to say she loves cats! Made from pine.

Lighthouse Rocker

After my mom saw the rocker I made for my wife, she mentioned how nice she thought it was. I knew then that I wanted to make one for her but with something other that the humming birds. My mom loves lighthouses – so with some help from my wife, we found some clip art, resized it to fit and I started on the lighthouse rocker. This was stained with a cherry dutch oil and clear polyurethane.

Scrap Wood Table

I am working on building a bed frame that is made of pine and redwood. I had some scraps from some redwood 2” x 6” boards. So I doweled and glued them together for fun. Then I started sanding them and thought it would make a nice table top. I capped the ends with strips of pine. The legs are also made of pine. Coated with clear dutch oil and polyurethane. We are using it as a coffee table.

Humming Bird Rocker

When my wife and I first got married, I moved into the house that she was renting. She had a family of humming birds who would visit often. They even built a nest and laid eggs on the porch. My wife loved it. I saw this pattern and knew I had to make it for her. Made from pine with a medium dutch oil stain topped with a clear polyurethane.

Welcome

During this past year I have learned that I enjoy working with wood a great deal. I have done some woodworking in my past so I am not totally new to it.

In this blog I will share my various projects I am working on. If there is a story behind it, I will add that too. Of course I will add pictures when possible.

I do not claim to be an expert; I just want to share something I am enjoying with anyone interested. Please feel free to leave comments, suggestions and your thoughts on what I have posted.

Thanks!
